Scottish Jewish Archives Speaker Event: Phil Alexander

Phil is a British Academy Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, where he looks at historical Jewish-Scottish musical encounters. He has published articles on Glaswegian cantors, memorial silence in Berlin and salsa in Scotland, and his monograph exploring the diversity and complexity of Berlin’s contemporary klezmer and Yiddish music scene will be published by Oxford University Press in October 2020. He is also a busy musician, leading the acclaimed band Moishe’s Bagel and performing regularly with many of the UK’s finest folk and jazz musicians. For this event, Phil will talk about klezmer music history and its more recent revival in Europe. The talk will also include musical examples
