Magen David Adom guest speaker at Giffnock Synagogue:
Michael arrived in Israel from the United States in October 1972 as a volunteer in a Jewish Agency program for university graduates, and worked for a year in an Israeli development town. He had planned to return to the United States at the end of that year, but the 73′ war which broke out a week before his planned return, changed his plans, changed his country of residence, and changed his direction in life. After being asked by the Jewish Agency to care and take responsibility for some of the thousands of volunteers who had come to Israel during the war, he wound up staying for another 42 years, marrying an Israeli girl, bringing up two children, playing semi pro basketball, coaching basketball, completing army service, working in industrial enterprises including the Israel Aircraft Industries, working in government service in disaster planning, completing studies at the University of Tel Aviv with an MBA in 1982 and an MPH in 2008, and finally, working in the last 5 years from 2010 as a consultant for the Jewish Joint Distribution Community(JDC) , as their “boots on the ground” for non sectarian disaster response.
Michael has served as a volunteer EMT at Magen David Adom for the last five years doing regular ambulance shifts in the Tel Aviv area. During disaster response work for the JDC in Nepal, Haiti, the Philippines, Turkey, and Japan he often witnessed at first hand the activity of Magen David Adom in disaster situations which is one of the core missions of Magen David Adom.
Come and hear him!
