JAY Events Meeting about a Parkinson’s Trial
Research into a variant in the GBA gene, which occurs more frequently in the Ashkenazi Jewish community, is one cause of Parkinson’s, which is core project of Professor Anthony Schapira, of UCH and the Royal Free Hospital and his team. Another very important part of the work is a phase 3 clinical trial of a drug called Ambroxol, a key ingredient in cough mixture that is commonly used in Europe, but not here in the U.K. From the phase 1 and 2 clinical trials it is believed that Ambroxol can potentially halt the progression of Parkinson’s.
Cure Parkinson’s is the major funder of the impending phase 3 trial, which is due to start this year in 10 to 12 centres in the UK, involving around 330 people with Parkinson’s. The team running the trial is now seeking suitable participants, particularly from the Ashkenazi Jewish community.
There is an opportunity to hear Prof. Schapira speak on this work at a Zoom webinar.
