EJCC Learning for All – Jessica Spencer “Unbinding Isaac: from narrative to law and back again” – 7.30 pm NEW DATE

31st May 2021

Free

The akeidah, the binding of Isaac, is one of the most central—and troubling—stories in the Torah. In this session, we’ll examine how the early rabbis drew on the story of the akeidah to make law. What has the binding of Isaac to do with Passover, butchering, and the Temple rites? And what do these laws tell us about the akeidah itself?

Jessica is a Masorti rabbinical student from Edinburgh, currently studying at Hebrew College, Boston, where she is also the rabbinic intern in the adult learning department. She has previously learnt at Yeshivat Hadar and the Drisha Kollel, and has a background in interfaith work (which she currently keeps her hand in through scriptural reasoning with the evangelical next-door-neighbours). Jessica is a co-founder of Azara, a new cross-communal initiative creating a culture of Torah learning in the UK.
