Wednesday 24th June 2020 – Women In Medicine
Dr Judy Evans and Dr Susan Shenkin in conversation with David Ian Neville
Have times changed enough for women entering and working in medicine today? Or is there more work to be done?
Dr Judy Evans is the Honorary Secretary of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Evans has had a distinguished career in medicine, a career choice that was inspired by Dr Gertrude Herzfeld (1890-1981), paediatric surgeon and the first female practising fellow of the College.
Dr Susan Shenkin has been working as a clinical academic (Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant) in geriatric medicine at the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian since 2011. She is NRS (NHS Research Scotland) Ageing Specialty Lead.
Dr Gertrude Herzfeld has been described as a trailblazer for women in surgery
and a key figure in Edinburgh’s medical community. How difficult was her medical journey and how have things changed for women in medicine today?
