Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre Live – Jared Goldfarb “These are the People in THE Neighbourhood” 7.30 pm
An exploration of the diverse communities inside Jerusalem’s old city walls. Besides the millions of visitors from around the globe that come each year to experience the holy sites, who are the locals that get to live so close to the epicentre of the monotheistic faiths? What defines their various identities, where have they succeeded as communities, and what challenges do they face dwelling in such an intense place? On this virtual tour, we’ll visit each of the four quarters of the Old City, looking beyond the tourist sites, in order to get to know the residents and learn about their relationships to place and each other within the walls.
Jared Goldfarb is an independent educator and licensed tour guide based in Jerusalem with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. Born and raised in New Hampshire, he studied at Brandeis University, and has since lived in 6 different countries. Jared decided to spend a year in Israel… and never left.
Jared served as the Programme Director of Ta Shma: Pluralistic Jewish Learning for 8 years. Simultaneously, he graduated the National Tour Guide Course and since 1999 has worked as an independent guide for families, faith communities and multi-narrative student encounters with Israel/Palestine. He serves as a faculty member at Jerusalem institutions that welcome Christian clergy from around the world to study the Holy Land from an academic perspective. He teaches Middle Eastern history and the historical context of Judaism, Christianity and Islam for various seminaries and multi-faith missions.
