26th January 2016

Professor Peter Hayes

16th Holocaust Memorial Lecture:
Was the Holocaust ‘Modern’?

Tuesday 26 January 2016

16th Holocaust Memorial Lecture

Being delivered by Professor Peter Hayes, Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation Professor at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Professor Peter Hayes will examine the three usual lines of argument that trace the Holocaust to distinct features of modern society – ideology, methods, and executors – and contend that recent research regarding each, in fact, proves the deeply alarming opposite: far from being the outcome of processes of modernisation, the Holocaust involved an outburst of primitivism that the forces of modernity were unable to contain.

Following the lecture, there will be a Question & Answer session.

Venue: The Western Infirmary Lecture Theatre
Doors: 5.30pm (refreshments will be served)
Lecture Starts: 6.00pm
Lecture Finishes: 7.15pm
