SUMMARY:EJCC Live - With Hugo Rifkind in conversation with David Ian Neville via Zoom - 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Hugo will be talking about his new novel\, RABBITS\, which has just been published. \nRabbits is the explosive new novel from Times journalist Hugo Rifkind. Tommo has just\nmoved to a prestigious boarding school. A product of the middle class\, and with new-found\nindependence thrust upon him\, he finds himself invited into fading crumbling country houses.\nIt’s the early nineties and the elite he is now surrounded by is struggling for relevance.\nAlienated from the mainstream\, and running low on inherited wealth\, his peers have\nretreated into snobbery and fatalism. In this world\, half remembered traditions mix with\ndecadence and an awful lot of small dead animals. And sometimes\, not just animals. \nHugo Rifkind is a columnist\, critic and leader writer for The Times and a presenter\non Times Radio\, having formerly been a columnist for the Spectator\, GQ and the Herald. He\nis a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s comedy show The News\nQuiz\, and an occasional guest on television shows that aren’t supposed to be funny at all.\nHe was born and raised in Edinburgh\, studied in Cambridge\, and now lives in North London\nin a house where everybody else speaks German\, including the dog. \nBook here.

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Jewish Literary Society - David Horovitz: Whither Israel? Analysing the Elections of 1 November 2022 (ZOOM) 8pm
DESCRIPTION:On 1 November\, Israel is heading back to the polls for the fifth time since 2019. By the time of this scheduled talk\, clear results may not be available if Israel is to enter a protracted period of coalition formation\, as has been in the past. We are fortunate indeed to welcome to the Lit. the founding editor of The Times of Israel\, David Horovitz\, to make sense and unpack for us the results of the 1 November elections and to analyse their implications for the future. \nDavid immigrated to Israel from London in 1983\, was editor and publisher of the award-winning magazine The Jerusalem Report\, editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post and launched The Times of Israel as an English paper in 2012. It now publishes in French\, Arabic\, Persian and Hebrew (Z’man Yisrael) and has an average of 40 million monthly readers. He lectures widely in Israel\, the USA and Europe on Israeli current affairs and has conducted landmark interviews with Barack Obama\, Vladimir Putin\, Volodymyr  Zelensky and\, much to delight of his children\, Paul McCartney. He has published several books on Israel\, including The Jerusalem Report’s 1996 biography of Yitzchak Rabin – Shalom\, Friend- which he edited and co-wrote\, and which won the US National Jewish Book Award for Non-Fiction. \nThe daily and weekend edition of The Times of Israel\, as well as The Jewish Times\, may be dropped into your electronic post by ordering it from www.timesofisrael.com. You can enjoy an ad-free experience by taking out a modest monthly or annual subscription\, which is greatly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Jewish Literary Society - Maria Chamberlain: ‘Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Jewish’ (ZOOM) 8pm
DESCRIPTION:Maria Chamberlain’s book Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Jewish (published by Vallentine Mitchell\, May 2022) is based on her parents’ and grandparents’ experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland and her family’s post-war life in Stalinist Poland and later in the UK. The book\, which is part testimony\, part tribute to her Holocaust survivor parents\, celebrates their courage and resilience\, and brings to life on the page several family members who perished. Much of this history is harrowing and tragic\, but it presents touching and tender portraits of her family members in extraordinary times. Maria ponders on how it was possible for so many seemingly ordinary people (German\, Polish and Ukrainian) to participate in this unspeakable evil. She talks about the after-effects of the Holocaust on her survivor parents\, and how this legacy has shaped her own identity. \nMaria who was born soon after the war in Kraków\, Poland\, emigrated with her parents to the UK in 1958 and settled in Edinburgh\, where she still lives. She has led an academic career as a plant scientist and lecturer of Biology at Edinburgh University.

SUMMARY:Jay Events - Meeting about Parkinsons' Disease research - 11am
DESCRIPTION:JAY Events Meeting about a Parkinson’s Trial \nResearch into a variant in the GBA gene\, which occurs more frequently in the Ashkenazi Jewish community\, is one cause of Parkinson’s\, which is core project of Professor Anthony Schapira\, of UCH and the Royal Free Hospital and his team.  Another very important part of the work is a phase 3 clinical trial of a drug called Ambroxol\, a key ingredient in cough mixture that is commonly used in Europe\, but not here in the U.K. From the phase 1 and 2 clinical trials it is believed that Ambroxol can potentially halt the progression of Parkinson’s. \nCure Parkinson’s is the major funder of the impending phase 3 trial\, which is due to start this year in 10 to 12 centres in the UK\, involving around 330 people with Parkinson’s. The team running the trial is now seeking suitable participants\, particularly from the Ashkenazi Jewish community. \nThere is an opportunity to hear Prof. Schapira speak on this work at a Zoom webinar. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83761831509
