SUMMARY:EJCC Learning for All - Jared Goldfarb "You Shall Work the Land\, and Preserve It" 7.30 pm
DESCRIPTION:There is much concern worldwide about climate change and the increasing havoc it will continue to wreak upon our communities. The dominant causes are no mystery\, and while industry is a major culprit\, it’s no secret that our actions as individuals are contributing to the crisis. Ironically enough\, for thousands of years\, our Jewish tradition has been calling on us to nurture a sacred relationship with our natural surroundings and be conscious about the way we benefit from the earth’s resources\, but for some reason we don’t focus our collective Jewish energy on this moral responsibility. In this session\, we’ll learn together some of the fundamental textual concepts\, as well as a few lesser-known teachings\, that both inform and inspire us to heed the call and repair the world. \nJared Goldfarb is an independent educator and licensed tour guide based in Jerusalem with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. Born and raised in New Hampshire\, he studied at Brandeis University\, and has since lived in 6 different countries. Jared decided to spend a year in Israel… and never left. \nJared served as the Programme Director of Ta Shma: Pluralistic Jewish Learning for 8 years. SUMMARY:Scottish Jewish Climate Network: Combatting Denial

We’ll examine tactics used by opponents of climate science\, and their close similarities to those employed to promote Brexit\, Trump\, and most recently non-compliance with Covid rules\, often by the exact same people.

SUMMARY:6PM - Genocide Prevention Panel
DESCRIPTION:Sign up: http://yetagaingenocideprevention.eventbrite.co.uk \nThe 9th December marks the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. \nWe are delighted to be hosting this panel discussion with 4 incredible speakers. This event aims to serve as an introduction to the concept of genocide and tackle the misinformation that we are seeing surface on social media. \nQuestions to panelists must be submitted in advance through the Eventbrite registration\, or by emailing Kirsty.YetAgain@gmail.com. \n  \n\n\nPanelist Biographies \nRuth Barnett\, MBE Kindertransportee\, Educator and Author \nRuth Barnett came from Berlin to England on the Kindertransport in 1939 at age four to escape Nazi persecution. Raised in three foster families and a hostel\, she did not see her parents for ten years. \nShe was a secondary school teacher for 19 years and a psychotherapist for over 30 years. She is retired now and has been writing books and speaking in Holocaust education for over 20 years challenging young people to think widely and move from passive bystander to active upstander. \nHer daughter\, Tania\, now joins her in giving talks. Ruth’s biography\, “Person of No Nationality”\, was published in 2009. \nDr Kate Ferguson Co-Executive Director\, Protection Approaches \nDr Kate Ferguson is a foreign policy expert driving a new approach to the prevention of mass atrocity crimes. She is Co-Executive Director at Protection Approaches\, a London-based NGO she co-founded in 2014 to change how identity-based violence is understood in order to transform how it is prevented. Kate is the first Chair of Policy at the European Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia. She has trained and advised state representatives\, parliamentarians\, and law enforcement from across the world. Between 2012 and 2018\, Kate lectured on subjects related to human rights\, international justice\, and UK foreign policy. Her book\, Architectures of Violence: The Command Structures of Modern Mass Atrocities will be published in January 2021 by Hurst and Oxford University Press. \nOlivia Marks-Woldman\, OBE Chief Executive\, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust \nOlivia joined the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) as Chief Executive in February 2012. She has overseen the growth of Holocaust Memorial Day around the country and a hugely increased media presence. \nOlivia believes passionately that everyone\, regardless of age or background\, should know about the Holocaust\, Nazi Persecution and the subsequent genocides\, and should set aside time to remember all those who suffered. She feels fortunate to be working for an organisation that enables people to do this\, that encourages people to consider their own responsibilities\, and that puts the life stories of those who were murdered and those who survived at the centre of commemorations. \nBefore joining HMDT\, Olivia worked in a number of other charities\, mainly in roles that involved political lobbying\, policy development and stakeholder engagement. \nMichael Polak Barrister\, Church Court Chambers \nMichael Polak is a barrister practising in human rights\, criminal\, and international law at Church Court Chambers. Michael is also a Director at Justice Abroad which helps people who need assistance dealing with legal proceedings overseas. He is on the advisory committee of the World Uyghur Congress London office and undertakes work for the WUC and Uyghurs and their families who have been subject to disappearance or arbitrary detention.

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre Live Learning for All: Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris: Tales from Psalms: How I weaned myself from G-d’s breast (Session on Psalm 131)
DESCRIPTION:Psalm 131\, one of the shortest of all of the psalms\, also contains one of the most difficult to translate lines. In just three brief verses\, the psalmist describes his (?) relationship to God. But what is the imagery employed and what might it have to do with breast-feeding and weaning? Come along for a fascinating discussion traversing the fields of biblical linguistics (in translation – no prior knowledge of Biblical Hebrew required)\, psychoanalysis\, feminist theory and more! \nDeborah Kahn-Harris is Principal of Leo Baeck College (LBC)\, which trains Reform and Liberal rabbis for the UK and Europe. She has semicha from LBC and holds a PhD in Bible from the University of Sheffield\, specialising in feminist Bible criticism. She is married to Keith and they have two teenagers\, a cat\, and two budgies. In her spare time she plays the Celtic harp and reads far too much science fiction.

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre Live Learning for All: Rabbi Reuben Livingstone
DESCRIPTION:The Unlikely Warrior: Jewish Attitudes to Armed Conflict and Those that Go to War from Torah Times to the Current Day \nRabbi Reuben Livingstone CF LLM \nAmbivalence and even antagonism to war and armed conflict appears to be the norm in many rabbinic sources from the Talmud to later authorities. Yet the Torah and Tanach are full of wars – as is Jewish historical experience. We will discuss the explanation of this paradox and seek to peel back the layers and identify the authentic Jewish view in this area. \nParticipation is free\, but donations can be made using this link www.tinyurl.com/ejccdonate

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre Live presents #MeToo - Sexual Assault in the Tanach: Sarah Bronzite
DESCRIPTION:Learning for All\nWednesday 8th July 2020 7.30-9.15 pm\n#MeToo: Sexual Assault in the Tanach\nSarah Bronzite\nIn October 2017\, one simple hashtag revealed unimaginable levels of sexual harassment and assault. And yet … it’s always been there. In this session we will catalogue and discuss narratives of biblical sexual assault in Tanach. Using these and a few contemporary examples\, we will consider why victims don’t speak up\, challenge thinking that says most sexual harassment/assault is ‘not serious’\, and see what our community can do to address the problem. Everyone welcome. \nOriginally a social researcher\, Sarah is now a primary school teacher in Aberdeen. She has combined her love of research and education in a recent research project which aims to show how UK school-based sex education can help to reduce sexual violence. She also writes about childfree women\, and gender-based violence. She has been involved in helping to address issues of sexual harassment in Jewish communal workplaces. \nThis will be an event on Zoom and will be recorded. Join the event from 7.30 pm for a 7.45 pm start. To book a place at this event please use this link: https://tinyurl.com/EJCC0807 to complete your registration.
