SUMMARY:University of Glasgow 25th Anniversary Holocaust Memorial Lecture - 6pm Live and via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:25th Anniversary Holocaust Memorial Lecture in 2026\nThe University of Glasgow is honoured to welcome back Professor Bernard Wasserstein\, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Chicago\, to deliver the 25th Anniversary Holocaust Memorial Lecture: Jewish Resistance and Collaboration during World War II. Professor Wasserstein co-founded this lecture series alongside the late Professor Otto Hutter. This programme is supported by a grant from The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR). \nWhat led some Jews in wartime Europe to become resisters to the Nazis\, whether as undercover agents for the Allies\, rebel fighters in Warsaw\, or maquisards in rural France? And what led some others to become collaborators with the Nazis as informers for the SS\, policemen in ghettos\, or members of German-appointed Jewish Councils in Holland and Poland? Both resistance and collaboration were fringe phenomena involving only small numbers of Jews but they have aroused fierce controversy among historians. Raul Hilberg discounted Jewish resistance as feeble and insignificant. Hannah Arendt denounced the Jewish Councils as complicit in mass murder. Both those judgements aroused impassioned reactions. Has the time now arrived for a more measured appraisal? \nCO-FOUNDED DISTINGUISHED SERIES: Professor Bernard Wasserstein is to deliver the 25th Glasgow University Holocaust Memorial lecture \nProfessor Bernard Wasserstein \nBernard Wasserstein is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Chicago. Earlier in his career he served as President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and as Professor of History at Glasgow University. His books include On the Eve: The Jews of Europe Before the Second World War (awarded the Yad Vashem International Book Prize) and\, most recently\, A Small Town in Ukraine: The Place We Came From\, the Place We Went Back To. \nDoors Open 5.30pm \nBook https://www.gla.ac.uk/events/holocaustmemorial/upcomingholocaustmemoriallectures/ \n

SUMMARY:University of Glasgow 25th Holocaust Memorial Lecture - 6pm - 7pm
DESCRIPTION:25th Holocaust Memorial Lecture\nThe University of Glasgow is delighted to welcome Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls\, Professor in Conflict Archaeology and Genocide Investigation at the University of Huddersfield\, to present the 25th Holocaust Memorial Lecture\, entitled All That Remains? Objects from Treblinka Extermination Camp. This project is sponsored by The Association of Jewish Refugees. \nYou can register to attend the event in-person or to attend online. \nLecture Overview:  \nAs part of their efforts to hide their crimes\, the Nazis and their collaborators attempted to destroy the traces of the sites they had constructed to wipe out European Jews and of the remains of those they had murdered. At Treblinka extermination camp\, these efforts resulted in the demolition of camp buildings\, the levelling of the landscape and the burning of the bodies of between 800\,000 and one million people. However\, forensic archaeological investigations in the camp terrain have resulted in the discovery of much physical evidence related to the camp. In this lecture\, Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls will discuss the objects found during surveys and minimally invasive excavations and the ways in which analysis of them has revealed new information about a range of lived experiences at the camp.

SUMMARY:University of Glasgow Annual Holocaust Memorial Lecture - 7pm - 8pm - Live and via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Placing the Holocaust: Observations from the Janowska Camp\, Ukraine\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n  \nWe at the University of Glasgow  invite you to join us for the 24th Holocaust Memorial Lecture\, Placing the Holocaust: Observations from the Janowska Camp\, Ukraine. The lecture will be given by Dr Waitman Wade Beorn\, Assistant Professor in History at Northumbria University. \n  \nLecture Overview \nThe Holocaust was a profoundly spatial event; it took place in specific locations and under specific circumstances\, rather than in a theoretical realm.  Yet\, we often take the places of the Holocaust for granted or as mere backdrops to the event itself.  By examining details of the Janowska camp\, located outside of Lviv in what is now Ukraine\, this lecture will show how looking at the space  of destruction — both metaphorically and literally — can further our understandings of some of the universal elements of the Holocaust. – Dr Waitman Wade Beorn. \n  \nThis lecture will take place in the Sir Charles Wilson Lecture Theatre\, and will also be streamed live for those wishing to view online. \nDoors Open: 6.30pm \nBook here.

SUMMARY:University of Glasgow Annual Holocaust Lecture - 6pm
DESCRIPTION:University of Glasgow Annual Holocaust Lecture\nProfessor Shirli Gilbert of UCL will speak on  ‘Music on the Brink of Destruction’.\nAn extraordinary range of musical activities\, both forced and voluntary\, took place in the Nazi ghettos and camps\, from the earliest internment centres established in 1933 until the liberation in 1945. The musical works created there by prisoners are extraordinary documents from the time. In this talk\, Professor Shirli Gilbert will present original songs from this period\, including some rare post-war recordings. The songs offer rich insight into victims’ experiences\, conveying the uncertain and shifting perspectives of prisoner communities as they made sense of lived reality. \nRefreshments Served: 6pm\nLecture start time: 7pm\nLecture end time: 8pm \nAttendees can take part in the lecture both online or in person\, choose your ticket type on our registration page here.

SUMMARY:22nd Annual Glasgow University Holocaust Memorial Lecture - 6pm - 7pm
DESCRIPTION:The University of Glasgow welcomes Dame Stephanie Shirley CH to deliver the 22nd Holocaust Memorial Lecture. \n \nHer life story begins with her 1939 arrival in Britain as an unaccompanied Kindertransport refugee. In 1962\, she started a software house\, Freelance Programmers\, that pioneered new work practices and changed the position of professional women\, especially in hi-tech. She went on to create a global business and a personal fortune shared with her colleagues; she made 70 of her staff millionaires at no cost to anyone\, but herself. \nSince retiring in 1993\, her focus has been increasingly on philanthropy based on her strong belief in giving back to society. In 2009/10 she served as the UK’s first ever national Ambassador for Philanthropy. Her charitable Shirley Foundation has initiated and funded a number of projects that are pioneering by nature and strategic in impact\, totaling £67m to date. The focus is on IT and her late son’s disorder of autism. \nBook or reserve a place on the waiting list to attend or book a virtual ticket here.

SUMMARY:Annual Glasgow University Holocaust Memorial Lecture - 5.30pm to 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:University of Glasgow Annual Holocaust Lecture 2017 – “East West Street: a personal take on Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity”. \nSpeaker –  Philippe Sands QC. \nProfessor Sands offers a lecture on the writing of his acclaimed new book – part historical detective story\, part family history\, part legal thriller. He centres on a remarkable\, untold story of individual perseverance\, how Rafael Lemkin and Hersch Lauterpacht – the lawyers who brought ‘genocide’ and ‘crimes against humanity’ into international law – learned  that the man they were prosecuting at Nuremberg – Hans Frank\, Hitler’s personal lawyer and Governor General of occupied Poland – was responsible for the murder of their own families. \nCopies of Professor Sands book will be available for purchase on the night\, with a book signing taking place immediately afterwards. \n  \nVenue – Sir Charles Wilson Lecture Theatre. \nThe lecture starts at 6 pm\, but there will be tea and coffee from 5.30. \nThis event is free to attend\, however you are required to register before attending – http://www.gla.ac.uk/alumni/events/headline_503716_en.html \n\n
