SUMMARY:SJAC Speaker and Bagel Brunch Event - Alan Brodie - 12 Noon
DESCRIPTION:Alan Brodie – From the Avrom Greenbaum Players to the West End: A Theatrical Journey\n \nAlan’s theatrical journey began with his parents Maxwell & Judy Brodie who were stalwarts of the Avrom Greenbaum Players. He is currently a London West End literary agent representing many award-winning playwrights for theatre\, film\, television\, and radio. Alan’s pioneering work with Literary Estates has led him to manage the estates of many high-profile dramatists including Noel Coward\, for whom he manages an extensive archive. As a law student\, Alan was a director with the Edinburgh University Theatre Company before moving to London where he began work at a dramatists’ play agency\, before setting up his own company\, Alan Brodie Representation\, in 1997. Alan will speak about his journey from growing up in Glasgow to his work in the West End\, Broadway and beyond and illustrate his talk with some unique items from the Coward archive.

SUMMARY:SJAC Open Day - speaker Maria Chamberlain - 2pm
DESCRIPTION:SCOTTISH JEWISH ARCHIVES CENTRE OPEN DAY \nMaria Chamberlain is the daughter of two Holocaust survivors. She was born after the war in Kraków\, Poland\, and emigrated with her parents to Scotland in 1958 when she was 11 years old. They settled in Edinburgh\, where she still lives. Her parents initially bid her to ‘Never Tell Anyone You’re Jewish’\, but eventually they relented\, recognising that intimate stories collectively make history. Her book tells their stories and those of the family members who perished. Maria worked at Edinburgh University teaching and researching plant and fungal biology. Now in her retirement she still maintains contact with students as an Honorary Lecturer and Programme Secretary of the Botanical Society of Scotland. \n \nBooking essential as spaces are limited.  Book online at  https://www.trybooking.com/uk/CEBX

SUMMARY:Scottish Jewish Archives Centre Open Day - 2pm - 4pm
DESCRIPTION:SCOTTISH JEWISH ARCHIVES CENTRE \nOPEN DAY \nScottish Jews Serving Their Country\n\nWe will remember Jewish men and women who fought and died in wartime\, showing material from the Archives Centre collections.  We will also take part in a UK-wide commemoration (led by the We Were There Too project) of the centenary of The British Jewry Book of Honour. Visitors will have the opportunity to view this impressive 1\,000 page plus volume\, which contains some 50\,000 records of Jews who served in the armed forces during the conflict between 1914-1918\, as well as a number of photographs.\n\nAlthough many of the Jews in Scotland by the late 19th century were of immigrant birth or parentage\, the community was anxious to show its loyalty to the British crown. As early as 1898\, a Glasgow Jewish Volunteer Association was formed in Garnethill Synagogue\, with Rev E P Phillips as chaplain. A small number of Scottish Jews went to Africa to serve in the British Army in the South African and Boer Wars and some were killed on active service.\n\nMany Scottish Jews served in the First World War\, in Europe and also in the Middle East. Over 125 died. Again in the Second World War\, many served in the British forces around the world\, with almost 100 killed. Jews served in the Army\, Navy and Air Force\, but also in the Fire Service\, the Land Army\, the Women’s Timber Corps and as Bevin Boys. Rev. Dr. I.K. Cosgrove\, long-term minister of Garnethill Hebrew Congregation\, was Senior Jewish Chaplain to the armed forces in Scotland during the Second World War and a pioneer in interfaith relations in Glasgow\nEntry free but booking essential. \nFurther details can be found at – https://www.sjac.org.uk/next-open-day-2/

He went to Hutchie\, taught in the Glasgow Hebrew College and was involved in various youth and education groups in the Glasgow Jewish Community. He did his first degree at Glasgow University and still keeps up with old school and university friends in Glasgow\, coming up as often as he can.
