SUMMARY:Interfaith Glasgow - Scriptural Reasoning - Fasting - 6pm - 8.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Scriptural Reasoning: Fasting\nAn interfaith dialogue event for Jews\, Muslims\, and Christians\nAs we approach Ramadan and during the season of Lent\, join us to explore the significance and practice of fasting in the Muslim\, Christian and Jewish traditions\, whilst enjoying the joint hospitality of the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society and Cathcart Old Parish Church. \nYou will be offered a short guided tour of the church – which has a fascinating history – and will share a delicious meal\, before learning about fasting through discussion of texts from the Qur’an\, Hebrew Bible and New Testament. After all\, the more we enjoy our food\, the more we can appreciate the sacrifice of fasting! And\, by exploring together the similarities and differences in the texts and how they are interpreted\, you will gain a deeper understanding of your neighbours and of these Abrahamic traditions. \nThis will be an enjoyable evening with excellent speakers and friendly conversation in small groups. It follows a previous Scriptural Reasoning hosted by Garnethill Synagogue\, but you do not need to have attended the first event. If you’ve never experienced Scriptural Reasoning before this will be a great introduction! \nPlease note: registration is essential and spaces are limited\, so please reserve your place now! Interfaith Glasgow hosts numerous Scriptural Reasoning events throughout the year – some in an ‘open’ format where members of any faith can attend\, and others which are limited to Christians\, Muslims and Jews allowing them to explore more deeply the similarities and differences across their common Abrahamic heritage. If this particular event isn’t for you we hope you’ll consider passing it on to someone who might be interested. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Scriptural Reasoning \nScriptural Reasoning is a method of interfaith dialogue that aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of faith traditions through a focus on scriptures that follow a common theme. This event will feature speakers from Sikh and Jewish backgrounds who will present texts on the theme of heroic figures\, followed by time for participants to discuss the texts in smaller groups. \nYou do not have to be in any way expert in your texts or tradition to participate. People often comment on how much they learn at Scriptural Reasoning events – about their own tradition as well as the traditions of others! \nSpaces are limited so book now to avoid disappointment. \nNB: Interfaith Glasgow hosts numerous Scriptural Reasoning events throughout the year – some in an ‘open’ format where members of any faith can attend and share\, and others in a ‘closed’ format which follows the traditional Scriptural Reasoning practice of including Jews\, Christians and Muslims who share a common Abrahamic heritage. This particular event is a closed Scriptural Reasoning. If it’s not for you we hope you’ll consider passing it on to someone who might be interested. \nOn booking you will be asked to choose from a list of options: “Christian”\, “Muslim” or “Jewish.” Please choose only the ticket type which is appropriate to you\, as this is to ensure that all three religions will have a balanced number of attendees for fruitful discussion. \nIf your ticket type is sold out\, please join the waiting list by emailing info@interfaithglasgow.org

SUMMARY:Faith and COVID-19: Staying Connected at a Time of Physical Distancing
DESCRIPTION:Religious communities are facing particular challenges during COVID-19 as they can’t meet at a time when they are in special need of the solace and support they get from their communities. Many are exploring innovative ways of maintaining these connections\, mainly online\, while others may be struggling to know where to start. \nThere are also many – particularly older people – who are not online and so other methods may need to be devised to help them feel connected. At this online dialogue event\, you’ll hear from diverse community leaders from Glasgow\, London and New York sharing about how they are responding to these challenges. We’ll also try out using Zoom’s “break out rooms” so you can meet our speakers and other participants in a small group and share your own ideas and experiences. \nSpeakers: \nKoshin Paley Ellison\, Robert Chodo Campbell\, co-founders of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care. Koshin wrote a guidance article on the importance of keeping Buddhist communities connected called ‘No Longer Alone’ and began leading online meditation classes in response to COVID-19. \nRev. Jonathan Fleming\, minister of St John’s Parish Church\, Largs. During COVID\, Jonathan has been doing frequent Facebook live sessions\, speaking directly to his congregation\, leading them in prayer\, and singing hymns. \nAcharyaji Mishra is a priest at the Hindu Mandir Glasgow. The Mandir has been broadcasting live facebook videos of prayers every day as a way to deliver worship to communities unable to visit in person. \nFiona Frank from SCoJeC (Scottish Council of Jewish Communities). SCoJeC has cultivated resources for community care and outreach and creating online communal activities. \nImam Is’Haaq Jasat from National Huffadh Association UK. He is the founder and CEO of the National Huffadh Association\, which has been working hard to create guidance for online teaching (Madrasah) to Muslim communities during COVID-19. \nRegistration details:\nPlease click the link below to register and you will be sent the Zoom link and password via e-mail shortly before the event. \nYou do not need to download Zoom or have an account – simply click on the link we send you and put in the password.
