SUMMARY:EJCC Live: Olivia Marks-Woldman - 7.30pm - 9pm via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre Live presents: \nOlivia Marks-Woldman\, OBE \nChief Executive – Holocaust Memorial Day Trust \nin conversation with writer/director David Ian Neville \nOlivia joined the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) as Chief Executive in February 2012. She has overseen the growth of Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) around the country and a hugely increased media presence. \nOlivia passionately believes that everyone\, regardless of age or background\, should know about the Holocaust\, Nazi persecution of other groups and more recent genocides\, and should set aside time to remember all those who suffered. She feels fortunate to be working for an organisation that enables people to do this\, that encourages people to consider their own responsibilities\, and that puts the life stories of those who were murdered and those who survived at the centre of commemorations. \nBefore joining HMDT\, Olivia worked in a number of other charities\, mainly in roles that involved political lobbying\, policy development and stakeholder engagement. Olivia lived in Glasgow for nearly eight years prior to relocating to London and is married to a Glaswegian. \nTo book: https://www.trybooking.co.uk/CCTR

SUMMARY:EJCC Learning for All - Rabbi Sybil Sheridan "The Gender of God" 7.30 pm - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:EDINBURGH JEWISH CULTURAL CENTRE – Learning for All Event via Zoom \nWe know God has no gender\, but when we talk about God we have to use human terms\, and even in English\, it is impossible to do so in entirely gender neutral language. From the beginning of the Bible there is evidence that God language includes female imagery as well as male. Is this evidence of the great insight of our ancestors\, or relics of an ancient goddess worshipping culture? Either way\, these female descriptions can broaden our understanding of what God is for us today. \nSybil Sheridan is Rabbi of the Newcastle Reform Synagogue and director of the Lyons Learning Project. She is co-chair of the Liberal Reform Rabbinic and Cantorial Ethics Committee and teaches the Assembly of Rabbis online conversion course for the Reform Beit Din.

DESCRIPTION:  \n* You are what you eat(translation from the Yiddish! ) \nIn this talk\, Jane will look at some of her favourite traditional Ashkenazi foods and ask the question – how healthy are these foods? SUMMARY:EJCC Live - Phil Alexander and Sasha Lurje "The Sounds of Displacement: Yiddish songs in the aftermath of the Holocaust" - 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:After the war\, many Jewish survivors in Europe hoped to emigrate and start a new life elsewhere. However\, restrictive immigration policies of the USA and Palestine – the two main choices – meant that relocation remained largely impossible until 1948. As a result\, between 1945 and 1948\, approximately a quarter of a million Jews – along with three quarters of a million others – were housed in Displaced Persons camps set up by the Allies\, often on the sites of former concentration camps or military barracks.\nConditions in the camps varied but were often very difficult. Despite this\, musical life thrived in many instances. Orchestras and jazz bands were pulled together\, international artists like Yehudi Menuhin and Leonard Bernstein visited and performed\, new songs were written and old ones remembered. In addition\, song anthologists such as Vilna partisan Shmerke Kaczerginski toured the camps collecting songs and narratives\, attempting to preserve as much cultural memory as possible.\nIn this session Phil will take us through some of the many ways that music was a part of post-Shoah displaced refugee life. We will listen to archive materials\, discover more about the ensembles and anthologies that were created out of DP camp life\, and explore the importance of music under these difficult circumstances. We will see how music fulfilled many roles: documenting daily life\, a vehicle for remembering atrocities and persecution\, an essential way of raising spirits\, and a glimpse of possible futures elsewhere. The talk will also feature live performances of some of these remarkable songs from Sasha Lurje\, one of the finest contemporary interpreters of Yiddish song.\nParticipation will cost £5 (free for those on limited income).\nTo book a place: https://www.trybooking.co.uk/BAAO (please note that you will then need to complete your registration via Zoom – you will be sent an additional e-mail to enable you to do this).

SUMMARY:EJCC Learning for All - Jessica Spencer "Unbinding Isaac: from narrative to law and back again" - 7.30 pm NEW DATE
DESCRIPTION:The akeidah\, the binding of Isaac\, is one of the most central—and troubling—stories in the Torah. In this session\, we’ll examine how the early rabbis drew on the story of the akeidah to make law. What has the binding of Isaac to do with Passover\, butchering\, and the Temple rites? And what do these laws tell us about the akeidah itself? \nJessica is a Masorti rabbinical student from Edinburgh\, currently studying at Hebrew College\, Boston\, where she is also the rabbinic intern in the adult learning department. She has previously learnt at Yeshivat Hadar and the Drisha Kollel\, and has a background in interfaith work (which she currently keeps her hand in through scriptural reasoning with the evangelical next-door-neighbours). SUMMARY:The Hoppensteins – 120 years of an Edinburgh Jewish family with Fiona Frank - 7.30pm
DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Zvi David Hoppenstein and his wife Sophia arrived in Edinburgh in the 1880s\, and lived in eight different addresses in Leith\, Dalry\, St Michael\, and around the Meadows as they raised their nine children – five boys and four girls. \nFor her PhD at the Scottish Oral History Centre\, Strathclyde University\, Fiona Frank tracked down and interviewed Zvi David and Sophia’s descendants across the UK and as far as Cape Town. Some branches of the family were harder to find than others\, as ‘outmarriage’ meant that some cousins were no longer in touch with the wider family. Fiona listened as members of the family talked about their relationship with their Jewish identity and their Jewish roots. The story of the family and the research is featured in Fiona’s book\, Candles\, Conversions and Class: five generations of a Scottish Jewish Family published by the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre (see below for details of how attendees can purchase this book at a reduced price). \nFiona will talk about how and why she embarked on her research journey\, how she chose the Hoppenstein family (or how the Hoppenstein family chose her!)\, and how she tracked down different members of the family. She’ll share some of the stories she was told – and because we’re online\, we will have the opportunity of hearing from some of the extended Hoppenstein family who were interviewed\, who will tell some of their own stories as part of this fascinating session. \nFiona Frank has a BA in European Studies from the University of Bath\, a Masters of Education from the University of Sheffield in Adult Literacy studies\, and a PhD from Strathclyde University Centre. After 20 years working in adult education and educational research at Lancaster University\, she moved to a position with SCoJeC\, the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities in 2011\, and was their Projects and Outreach Manager\, carrying out research and organising events with Scotland’s Jewish communities\, till her retirement in autumn 2020. \nFiona Frank photo © Ruth Corney \nBooking instructions \nThis will be an event on Zoom. SUMMARY:EJCC Learning for All - Jared Goldfarb "You Shall Work the Land\, and Preserve It" 7.30 pm
DESCRIPTION:There is much concern worldwide about climate change and the increasing havoc it will continue to wreak upon our communities. The dominant causes are no mystery\, and while industry is a major culprit\, it’s no secret that our actions as individuals are contributing to the crisis. Ironically enough\, for thousands of years\, our Jewish tradition has been calling on us to nurture a sacred relationship with our natural surroundings and be conscious about the way we benefit from the earth’s resources\, but for some reason we don’t focus our collective Jewish energy on this moral responsibility. In this session\, we’ll learn together some of the fundamental textual concepts\, as well as a few lesser-known teachings\, that both inform and inspire us to heed the call and repair the world. \nJared Goldfarb is an independent educator and licensed tour guide based in Jerusalem with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. Born and raised in New Hampshire\, he studied at Brandeis University\, and has since lived in 6 different countries. Jared decided to spend a year in Israel… and never left. \nJared served as the Programme Director of Ta Shma: Pluralistic Jewish Learning for 8 years. He serves as a faculty member at Jerusalem institutions that welcome Christian clergy from around the world to study the Holy Land from an academic perspective. He teaches Middle Eastern history and the historical context of Judaism\, Christianity and Islam for various seminaries and multi-faith missions. \nTo reserve a place: www.tinyurl.com/EJCC160321\nParticipation free\, to donate: www.tinyurl.com/EJCCDONATE
